Breathing The Void (BTV) Boarding House, which is located on Awan Street, Jebres, Surakarta City, was designed based on the condition of the boarding houses that have stuffy rooms because there is no cross ventilation. In this area there are densely populated boarding houses that are already standing, so to create a boarding house that is of interest to tenants, this boarding house needs something different.
Breathing concept is applied by using roster material or porous walls to help with natural lighting and ventilation. Wall openings are expected to help lower the temperature in the room. Similar to the concept of breathing in humans who carry out the process of moving air in and out of the lungs, this boarding house is also designed so that air can enter and exit freely.
The concept of Void (Empty Space) is applied to provide a visual sense of space, because there are empty spaces in the corridor to circulate air. Creating a void does sacrifice space that could actually be a room, but the existence of a void also provides different benefits that make the boarding house less crowded and healthier for its residents.
The concept of flowing also appears in the form of space, namely the existence of a communal space that is used to meet and interact which makes the occupants less rigid and fluid. Coupled with the existence of cross ventilation in each room by pulling the walls of the room to the inside so that each room has a relationship with the outside and the wind can enter easily.
